‘Historic’ roadmap towards animal-friendly production in the Netherlands

In a landmark move for animal welfare, 11 stakeholders in the Netherlands, including farmers’ organisations, processors, retailers, social interest groups, and government authorities, have collectively signed an ambitious agreement aimed at significantly improving animal welfare in livestock production, with estimated costs running into the billions. More space for animals, more opportunities to express natural behaviour in good health, and a minimal amount of physical processing on the
