Hendrix Genetics is investing in a new location for its poultry breeding programme in the Netherlands. This will be a ‘pedigree facility’ where pure lines of chicken breeds will be reared.
It is clear that the site is being purchased rather than being a newly-built farm location, as the first activities will commence in August 2025. Within 6-8 months, the facility is expected to operate at full capacity. The new location will support the growth of the breeding programme for layers and traditional poultry.
The facility is intended for the top of the breeding pyramid in the poultry industry and features extensive rearing and production units, as well as a modern brooder facility. Feed intake is measured individually, thereby supporting targeted breeding for feed efficiency.
Evolving needs of the egg and poultry industry
“This facility will play a vital role in strengthening our R&D capabilities”, says Gosse Veninga, director of Product Excellence, Layers & Traditional Poultry Business Unit at Hendrix Genetics. “It enables us to deliver genetic solutions that meet the evolving needs of the egg and poultry industry across all housing systems and global markets.”
Other breeding objectives focus on traits such as egg production persistency, livability, eggshell quality and characteristics related to welfare.
Hendrix Genetics regards the investment as an important step for research and development, and it will help to meet the evolving needs of the poultry industry.
