Spain’s poultry laying and meat sectors can look back on a favorable 2025, despite avian influenza challenges. Egg and chicken production, prices, and consumption all showed strong positive trends.
This is the main conclusion from a Poultry Sector Table meeting at Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in Madrid. “The poultry sector could solidify a key role in the Spanish livestock industry through its economic impact, production capacity, and food supply importance,” noted the department.
The situation regarding avian influenza in Spain is currently under control, the panel heard. Spain has recorded 14 outbreaks in poultry farms, the last of those just over a month and a half ago. In mid-December, the last restrictions in the province of Valladolid were lifted. That means there is no remaining limitation on the movement of birds and their products for intra-community trade.
The department of agriculture in Madrid is working on a report of self-declaration of an avian influenza-free country before the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) for the trade with third countries. Nevertheless, Spanish poultry holders are strongly reminded not to relax surveillance and to maintain all individual protection and security measures at the highest level. Also, for the moment, the housing order for poultry is maintained for the entire Spanish territory.
The department noted: “The meeting has been a key space for participation and dialogue, in which the sectoral associations have presented their concerns and priorities. This forum has made it possible to identify the main challenges and opportunities for the future of the poultry sector, with the aim of advancing of measures that can further strengthen its competitiveness.”
