Dietary fibre is the part of plant material consisting mainly of cellulosic and non-cellulosic polysaccharides, and a non-carbohydrate component, lignin. These components are highly resistant to hydrolysis by alimentary enzymes and cannot, therefore, be digested or absorbed in the blood stream.
