Lithuania committed itself to conservation of its genetic resources by signing the Conservation Convention on Biological Diversity in Rio de Janeiro on June 11, 1992.   In 1995 FAO recognised the Vishtines goose breed as being monitored internationally and included into the FAO Global Databank for Animal Genetic Resources and the World Watch List for Domestic Animal Diversity.
