The experience of recent years has shown that avian influenza viruses low and medium pathogenicity can easily mutate into highly virulent forms and so testing for all AI viruses must now be taken very seriously. The European Union has gone so far as to redefine the avian influenza itself, an action which may have far reaching consequences for international trade.
